Touring coffee rig (The "B" rig)

Many people have jobs that include travel and it is important to include some home comforts while you are in a foreign place. I am frequently "on the road," touring with bands and artists as a member of their audio team.

There's a lot of routine that comes with touring. Most of the schedule depends on the band and the amount of production you are carrying. For instance:
10am - Load in and Setup
12pm - Lunch
2pm - Linecheck
3pm - Soundcheck
5pm - Opener Soundcheck
7pm - Doors
8pm - Opener
9pm - Headliner
11pm - Curfew
3am - Bus Call

That could be an average show day for a band carrying a truck of two worth of gear. It's important to start off with a comfortable moment to get you in the right headspace. For me, that's an excellent cup of handmade coffee.

A pour over style coffee kit is always in my pack whenever I'm traveling. It is comprehensive and the only item you need to source each day is water. The kit fits within my suitcase in a small to medium size utility tool bag for convenience and organization.  Ultimately, the quality of cup is dramatically improved over your typical batch brew served complimentary in the hotel lobby or from the nearest Starbucks... It's the perfect way to start your day.

A bonus of having a job with an itinerary, is the ability to pickup a new bag of coffee to try from wherever you are. It's fun to find different coffee roasters over the US and the globe.

  • I usually also include an Areopress (amzn.to/33AylMs) or a Cafflano Kompresso (amzn.to/3a98b5V) for an "espresso-like" coffee.
  • A 250-300g bag of your favorite whole bean coffee should also fit within the kit.

My typical recipe for V60 pour over is:
400g water to 25g coffee (16:1 ratio)

  1. Bring water to a boil.
  2. Fold filter along crease and place in v60.
  3. Rinse filter with hot water.
  4. Add 25g ground coffee to filter.
  5. Start a timer and pour 75g of water fully saturating the grounds.  Allow 45 seconds to bloom.
  6. Pour to 220g water in concentric circles, pouring mostly in a quarter-sized radius in the middle.
  7. Let drain until 1:30 then slowly pour to 400g.
  8. Brew is finished when the steady stream slows to a drip.
  9. Swirl or stir before enjoying.

If you're into homemade coffee either at home or on the road, share your kit or recipes with me below!
